September Meeting and Workshop Recap

Garden Club season is back in action and we kicked off our new year with a fun hands-on workshop during our first Seagrap circle meeting.
Our special guest was Julia Dechants, Master Gardener of Poinsettia Circle, who led a wonderful educational workshop on cuttings, seeds and propagation. We had a ton of fun sharing cuttings and learning your great tips.
Below are some of the tips shared at the meeting so they can be shared to any missing members, friends and family.
Julia’s 10 Propagation Tips:

1. Start with clean, sanitized instruments. Julia washes her instruments with soap and water and then sprays them with alcohol before each use.
2. Get your cuttings early in the morning when they are refresh and hydrated.
3. Consider timing. (Do a little homework to choose the optimal time of year for cutting and growing your new plant)
4. Get a better chance of success when using the soft tissue (newer growth and green tender area) of the plant verses the older part of the plant that is the harder woody part.
5. Terminate regrowth by pinching the top new growth off the top of the plant so it can focus on healing and growing without trying to also grow tall.

6. Cut right below leaf node. (make fresh cuts if you are using a cutting that has already healed)
7. Remove leaves off the stem, leaving just a small amount on the top so it isn’t wasting valuable energy trying to keep all the leaves alive.
8. Crop long larger leaves (like a crouton’s long big leaves) down to just a 3-4 inches (vs 8-12 inches).
9. Dip moistened cutting into growth hormone before potting.
10. SHARE! Once you learn to propagate and you reap a bountiful harvest, it’s your turn to share your cuttings and keep spreading the gardening love!
